Full of nutrients, chia seeds are perfect to sprinkle on top of your yogurt, toss in your smoothie, top off your salad, or what I love to do… make chia jam! If you enjoy incorporating jam in your daily breakfast routine, this chia jam recipe is a delight. Swap out the usual plain old strawberry jam for this fruity, fibre packed chia jam.

This is a perfect recipe if you want to change up your regular jam and try making your own at home! The puffed chia seeds make for a great spread on toast, with the addition of a subtle crunch from the seeds. Making homemade jam like this is so easy. Moreover, it’s also perfect when you want to start eating a little more naturally. 

Store bought jam can be filled with all kinds of sweeteners and preservatives. Therefore, with this recipe you’ll be able to choose what goes into your jam. This includes adding all your favourite seeds and berries to your liking. For example, I love spreading this chia jam on my morning toast with peanut butter, or even my pancakes sometimes! In other words, it really works with everything just like regular jam!

Chia Jam

Ingredients
  

INGREDIENTS:

    2 ½ cups frozen raspberries

      2 ¼ cup frozen blueberries

        ¼ cup chia seeds

          2 tablespoons lemon juice

            3 tablespoons maple syrup, to taste

              Instructions
               

              DIRECTIONS:

                In a medium mixing bowl, combine the frozen raspberries, blueberries, chia seeds and orange juice. Cover and let the mixture defrost for about three hours at room temperature, or overnight in the refrigerator (the front of the bottom shelf in the fridge is the ideal spot for defrosting, since it’s generally the warmest area).

                  Once the berries are defrosted and soft, use a potato masher (or the back of a big spoon or serving fork should work) to mash up the mixture to your desired consistency. I like some texture in my jam, so I don’t mash it much.

                    Taste the jam, and if you’d like it to be sweeter, stir in some maple syrup, to taste (keep in mind that you can always just drizzle maple syrup or honey onto your jam later, if you prefer). If the chia seeds aren’t nice and plump yet, let the mixture rest for about 20 minutes to let them absorb some more moisture.
